Disc Brakes -> AC-Delco Single Piston Rear Disc Brake (Type 1) -> Caliper Service -> Assemble -> Disassemble -> Replace

  • Remove 2/3 of brake fluid from master cylinder reservoir.
  • Raise and support vehicle.
  • Mark relationship of wheel to axle flange, then remove wheel and tire assembly.
  • Using a suitable C-clamp compress caliper piston enough for clearance.
  • Remove brake hose from caliper plug openings in caliper and brake hose to prevent fluid loss and contamination.
  • Remove caliper bolts, then the caliper housing from rotor and caliper bracket.
  • Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
    • Torque caliper bolts to 32 ft. lbs.
    • Torque brake hose bolt to 31 ft. lbs.

Pressure bleeding is recommended for all hydraulic systems. However, if a pressure bleeder is unavailable, use the following procedure. Brake fluid damages painted surfaces. Immediately clean any spilled fluid.

  • Remove vacuum reserve by pumping brakes several times with engine off.
  • Fill master cylinder reservoir with clean brake fluid. Do not let reservoir fall below half full during bleeding procedure.
  • If necessary, bleed master cylinder as follows:
    • Loosen master cylinder forward brake line connection until fluid flows from reservoir, then tighten brake line.

System Operation

The function of the Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) is to minimize wheel lock-up during heavy braking on most road surfaces. The system performs this function by monitoring wheel speed and controlling the brake fluid pressure to each front wheel and both rear wheels during braking.
