Caution Of Cracks On
Chevy II Engines
When rebuilding Chevy II engines, members are cautioned to test carefully for cracks which develop from the oil line to the lifter bores intersecting the water jackets.
Reports have been received regarding these cracks particularly in 3.2, 3.8 & 4.1L (194, 230, & 250 CID) engines.
To date no practical method of repairing the cracks has been discovered because they are inaccessible.
It is advised to subject these engines to pressure tests prior to rebuilding because the cracks are not always detected by magnetic particle inspection and may, when discovered, result in coolant seepage into the crankcase.
