Camshaft (Rocker) Cover Installation Caution On VW 1.5, 1.6 & 1.7L Engines
AERA cautions members installing camshaft (rocker) cover gaskets on engines manufactured by VW and used in the following applications:
Vehicle Years Displacement
Audi 1975-80 1.6L 1981-83 1.7L
Chrysler 1978-83 1.7L
VW 1978-80 1.5L 1976-80 1.6L 1981-84 1.7L
During production of these engines two types of studs were used to secure the camshaft cover to the cylinder head. Either a shouldered stud or a straight stud has been installed (see illustration below).
The camshaft cover gasket is obviously different depending on the type of stud used. Aftermarket gasket manufacturers have developed a gasket kit that fits both applications. If the shouldered stud is used, simply place the gasket as it comes out of the box. With the straight stud, install eight washers into the gasket stud holes. The AERA Technical Committee
